Camerata Variabile — De Profundis

Kirche St. Margarethen, Binningen
Saturday, 28 March
19:30

This program, with its connection to Lent, has many sacred and spiritual undertones. Some of the most beautiful works of music have arisen from moments when everything seemed to have reached its lowest point. The ensemble’s guest, bassist Jonas Jud, also finds his strength in the depths, and the second string quartet by the Austrian Georg Friedrich Haas, who taught in Basel for many years, opens its sonic space from the cello's low C. Tradition shimmers through it again and again, but it will be perceived as something lost, distant, murky. The music is heard as a sad farewell, and the glissandos seem to express a hopeless longing. In the last third of the string quartet, one thinks one hears Schubert—Schubert in the concept of disintegration. For this reason, this quartet by Haas is prefaced with Schubert's Quartet Movement in C minor. There will be two new interpretations of the theme “De Profundis” in the program, in addition to the cantata by the Danish-German Baroque composer Bruhns: one is by Iris Szeghy, the other by Joëlle Götz, who is currently still studying at the Musik Akademie Basel and from whom Camerata Variabile commissioned this program after an impressive world premiere at the Museum Tinguely.
Tickets are CHF 45 for adults and CHF 15 for students.
