Alsace 1940-1945

Dreiländermuseum Lörrach
Until November 23, 2025

Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, the Dreiländermuseum is presenting an exhibition created in 2022 as a collaboration between the Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg and the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart, which is now being adapted to the tri-border region.

In June 1940, following its military victory over the French army, the German Reich de facto annexed Alsace. According to the Nazis’ will, the border regions in the southwest were to be returned to Germany. All French influences were to be eradicated. From August 1942, Alsatians were drafted into the Wehrmacht. This forced recruitment, which violated international law, became a trauma for the Alsatian population. The memories of this event carry particular weight in Alsace.

The exhibition presents new perspectives on the role of National Socialism in Alsace during the 1930s, addresses German occupation during the Second World War, and examines the memories of Alsatians after 1945. At the same time, the exhibition tells the story of the events in the context of the upheavals in Europe from an Alsatian perspective.
