Basel’s Indoor Swimming Pools

With the cooler nights and the changing of the foliage comes the closing of Basel’s outdoor pools (Gartenbäder). The outdoor pool at Eglisee closed for the season on September 4, and the family pools at St. Jakob closed on September 11. The sports pool at St. Jakob will remain open for another couple of weeks, until September 25, as will the outdoor pools at Bachgraben. With the unusually high temperatures for a prolonged period of time this summer, the three outdoor pools recorded approximately 420’000 guests, a 30% increase over last year’s rainy summer.

Basel’s main indoor pool—the Rialto pool—is currently closed for extensive renovations and not expected to reopen until the fall of 2024, leaving those who would like to swim after the closure of the outdoor pools, with two indoor options:

Opening hours for the Kirschgarten indoor pool are Mondays from 11:00-16:30, Tuesdays to Fridays from 11:00-21:30, and on weekends from 10:00-18:00. Opening hours for the Hallenbad Eglisee will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00-22:00; Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00-19:30, and weekends from 9:00-19:00. Note that serious swimmers with a membership can do laps at the Eglisee pool from 6:00-8:00 on Mondays to Fridays.

Admission prices for both pools are CHF 5 for adults age 16 and older, CHF 3 for apprentices and students, and CHF 2 for children ages 6-16. In addition to single entries, 10-ticket booklets are available at a reduced rate, which can be redeemed in all indoor and outdoor pools, as well as on the artificial ice rinks over a period of three years. There are also multi-month memberships and an indoor pool winter membership, which are valid from the time the St. Jakob sports pool closes until it reopens the following year. The various memberships can be ordered online. If you prefer to purchase your memberships at the ticket offices, you can do so at the indoor pools and, from October 29, 2022, at the ticket offices of the artificial ice rinks in Eglisee and Margarethen.

The detailed admission prices, opening times on public holidays, as well as further information can be found on the website of the Office for Youth, Families, and Sports of Basel’s Education Department.
