The number of “heat days” with temperatures above 30^oC has increased in recent summers. To protect the health of their public service workers and allow them to hopefully finish their physically demanding shifts by 14:00, before the greatest heat develops, the community of Riehen has announced that garbage collection times between June 19 and September 1 will begin earlier during the day. Therefore, during this time, residents are asked to ensure that their garbage bags, bags for garden/organic waste, and paper bundles for paper collection are placed at the curb before 06:00 on the collection day so that trash collection can begin during the cooler early morning hours. The earlier pickup times were tested last year in a pilot study in Riehen and were well received by both workers and residents.

In Basel-Stadt, garbage collection on days with predicted high temperatures of 32^oC and higher also will begin earlier, at 05:00. Therefore, please ensure that your bags are placed at the curb in time for the early pickup. You can place them outside after 19:00 on the previous evening at the earliest to minimize the risk of animals getting into the bags and spreading their contents around.
