Eleonore Peduzzi Riva, who lives in Milan and Riehen, was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix Design 2023, bringing wider recognition to her decades-long contribution to design. Over the course of her career, this designer and architect ventured into interior design, product design, and art direction. Growing up in Basel, Peduzzi Riva studied interior design at the Gewerbeschule Basel before relocating to Milan in the late 1950s to attend the architecture faculty of the Polytechnic. In the early 1960s, together with her then-husband, Sandro Riva, she established an architectural practice in Milan, focusing on apartment conversions and private homes. Early in her career she delved into design, developing a system featuring a single aluminum profile that could be used to assemble a range of furniture (Lega Leggera, 1959). Notably, her approach emphasizes open designs that are flexible and can be rearranged, underscoring the freedom of the user. This ethos is evident in the variable DS 600 sofa, which Peduzzi Riva designed for de Sede in 1972 with Ueli Berger, Heinz Ulrich, and Klaus Vogt. In addition to lamps and ashtrays, Peduzzi Riva also developed fabrics and carpet designs.

Peduzzi Riva’s Milan studio was a valuable resource for Matylda Krzykowski, who explored its archives to create a scenographic display at Kunstraum Riehen. The exhibition takes a contemporary look at Peduzzi Riva’s work and thus pays tribute to one of Riehen’s most captivating creative minds.
