Basel is in the grip of football fever. The city on the Rhein is not only an art and culture metropolis, but also boasts a strong soccer tradition. The FC Basel club is firmly rooted in the city. The 2025 Women's European Football Championship will also start and finish in Basel. Kickoff is on July 2, and the grand final will take place on July 27. Reason enough to celebrate in style.
To this end, the Basel Sinfonietta and Theater Basel will present Moritz Eggert's football oratorio "7th Heaven." The German composer originally wrote the work for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Over 90 minutes, divided into two halves plus pre-match and injury time, his work explores the sport itself, the fans, and the officials.
The Basel-based author Wolfgang Bortlik has created a Basel version of the work based on the original libretto by Michael Klaus. Eggert draws inspiration from the chants of the Joggeli football stadium and recreates the atmosphere of the FC Basel 1893 stadium in his new version of "7th Heaven." In addition to the Basel Sinfonietta under the direction of its Principal Conductor Titus Engel, the Theater Basel Choir will perform, as well as soprano Chelsea Zurflüh, tenor Paul Curievici, and baritone Kyu Choi from the opera ensemble. Celebrities from the world of football will be featured as speakers, including former football player and coach Beni Huggel, sports reporter Beni Thurnheer, and former football player and coach Danique Stein. There will be a concert introduction at 18:15 in the foyer of the Theater Basel.
Tickets are CHF 55-95 for adults, CHF 28-48 for students, and CHF 5 for kids up to age 12.
