Alfredo Rodriguez Solo — Christmas & Winter Nights
The exceptional Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, who was sponsored by Quincy Jones, is coming to Basel for the first time with a solo program. Growing up, Rodriguez's world was limited by his country's many restrictions. As his opportunities were limited, his parents enrolled him at a classical conservatory. In 2006, at age 19, he received an invitation to represent Cuba at the International Solo Piano Competition of the Montreux Jazz Festival. After applying and auditioning with 12 of the best pianists in the world, he was accepted and traveled to Switzerland, where he was eventually invited to the chalet of festival founder Claude Nobs to play for the guests, which included legendary producer Jones. When Jones returned to Los Angeles, he couldn't get Rodriguez out of his mind, considering him one of the best pianists he had ever seen. The trip from Havana to California obviously was worth it, as Rodriguez not only performs regularly on renowned stages around the world, such as the Playboy Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, Umbria Jazz, and Jazz A Vienne, but was also nominated for a Grammy® in the category “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella” for the track “Guantanamera” from his album “The Invasion Parade.”
Tickets are CHF 30.00-66.70.
