Back to Bach — Beatriz Blanco & Alexandre Foster

Johann Sebastian Bach gave cellists probably the most important solo music: six suites that no one on this instrument can avoid. “They are the quintessence of Bach's work, and Bach himself is the quintessence of all music,” said the famous Pablo Casals, for example. In fact, many composers also refer directly or indirectly to these works when writing for the cello. “Back to Bach” is therefore a return to the roots—back to Bach, but also back to the Hungarian-Swiss composer and pedagogue Sandor Veress. Among his students were Jürg Wyttenbach and Roland Moser; the cellist Thomas Demenga, himself an exquisite interpreter of Bach, also benefited from him. Before emigrating, Veress taught two composers in his native Budapest who went on to achieve eminent status: György Ligeti and György Kurtág. Beatriz Blanco and Alexandre Foster weave a delicate fabric from the works of these composers, with Bach's cello music providing the backbone.
