Ballet—La Fille Mal Gardée
In this retelling of a classical action ballet with music by Louis Ferdinand Hérold, Lise falls in love with Collette instead of young Colas. And Alain, who has been chosen by Lise’s mother as a son-in-law, develops a strange relationship with a scarecrow. The famous chicken dance is performed by rabbits, and hay bales wrapped in plastic serve as the stage setting. “La fille mal gardée” is one of the oldest known ballets. But in this new staging at Theater Basel, Belgian choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen turns the idyllic life in the country with its down-to-earth characters into a queer action ballet with gender confusion and plenty of double entendres.
Tickets are CHF 30–140.
