This spring, Basel will again host an exhibition of works by street artist Banksy. “Painting Walls” is dedicated to the greatest street artist of all time and for the first time in the world exhibits some of the original walls he painted. In addition to a rich selection of serigraphs, including true icons by the British artist such as “Girl with Balloon” and “Love is in the Air,” as well as numerous photos showing wall paintings, there will be three exceptional works from private collections that are actual parts of original walls painted by Banksy in 2009, 2010, and 2018 in London, Devon, and Wales. All three depict young children—representatives of a new generation that always seems to be the most sensitive to subjects around which the Banksy's interests revolve.
One of the three walls, “Season's Greetings,” painted in December 2018 in Port Talbot, Wales, was chosen as the key visual for the Basel exhibition. It shows a young boy catching snowflakes falling from the sky with his arms spread wide and his tongue sticking out. However, the flakes turn out not to be snow but ashes rising from a burning trash can—a clear condemnation of the world that adults pass on to new generations and illustration how hidden and insidious pollution can be.
Thanks to the collection of original and authentic works shown in the exhibition, viewers can immerse themselves in the imagination of an artist who has been crossing the cultural world stage for more than two decades. Banksy’s artistic messages also intervene in current war scenarios, proving once again his ability to stand in the middle of the present. Absolutely non-commercial in structure, “Banksy. Painting Walls” is not an immersive exhibition of reproductions, but a collection of original works that allow the viewer to see the contemporary world through the eyes of an extraordinary artist who leaves his mark with simple and often disruptive messages. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00-18:00, Friday to Sunday (and holidays) from 10:00-20:00.
Tickets are CHF 22-24 for adults, CHF 20-22 for students, CHF 15 for children ages 5-15, and CHF 62-65 for families of four.
