Basel Composition Competition — Final Concert

Don Bosco Basel
Sunday, 12 February
11:00

Hardly any other person has shaped Basel's musical life as much as Paul Sacher (1906-1999). As a conductor, commissioner of new compositions, and patron and member of numerous committees and institutions, he dedicated himself to the contemporary music of his century in many different ways. Sacher commissioned works such as Béla Bartók's "Music for String Instruments, Percussion and Celesta," Bohuslav Martinů's "Toccata e due canzoni," Igor Stravinsky's "Concerto en ré," and Arthur Honegger's "Symphony No. 4." In 1973, he founded the Paul Sacher Foundation and later established it as a research institution of international standing with the estate of Igor Stravinsky and collections of Anton Webern and Bruno Maderna.
In the spirit of the Basel conductor, Artistic Management GmbH, in cooperation with the Paul Sacher Foundation, has been organizing the "Basel Composition Competition" since 2017, an international composition competition headed by the jury president Wolfgang Rihm that aims to bring the most exciting composers of the 21st century to Basel.
In a selection process, 10-12 compositions were shortlisted, which were performed in three separate concerts on February 9-11. At this final concert with the Basel Sinfonietta, Sinfonieorchester Basel, and Kammerorchester Basel, the three winning compositions will be announced and awarded prize money totaling CHF 100,000.
