What do composers Unsuk Chin and Sofia Gubaidulina have in common? At first glance, not much. Whereas the music of Chin, who was born in South Korea and trained by György Ligeti, is not characterized by spiritual or religious inspirations and forces, Gubaidulina, who comes from Tatarstan, became famous for these characteristics. As a result, she was treated with hostility in the Soviet Union. What both have in common, however, is a—more or less smooth—connection to tradition.
After being awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2024, Chin is now also considered one of the great classics of contemporary music. And both are familiar with eruptive, furious forces—Chin's "Rocaná (Room of Light)" from 2008 and Gubaidulina's "Figures of Time" from 1994 represent this. Both works make full use of postmodern working methods, the orchestrations are bold and colourful. In between, works by Gubaidulina are heard that represent the religious element in her work.
Alice di Piazza is a benchmark interpreter for Gubaidulina’s work. The final version of the rarely performed piano concerto "Introitus," composed in 1978, is the result of close collaboration with Italian pianist. Her intensive engagement with Gubaidulina’s musical cosmos of began with the "Chaconne" from 1962, a piece of radical reduction.
Tickets are CHF 34-76 for adults, CHF 18-30 for students under age 25, and CHF 5 for kids up to age 12.
