Basel Sinfonietta — Frauenstimmen / UK

English conductor Jamie Phillips and the Basel Sinfonietta bring together energetic female power at its finest in "Frauenstimmen/UK," showcasing four British female composers from different generations and with highly diverse stylistic approaches This applies especially to the youngest composer, Laura Bowler. Described in the media as a "provocative, triple-threat composer-performer," she is considered a rising star in the music scene. Her work is multidisciplinary, socially critical, and generally expansive. This caused a stir at the 2024 Donaueschinger Musiktage. Bowler has written a new work for the Basel Sinfonietta, featuring percussion, piano, and a solo performance, in which she can also be heard. Helen Grime, on the other hand, also performs as an oboist. In "River," premiered by Kent Nagano in 2023, she musically portrays the central characteristics of rivers: their energy and violence, as well as their tranquility and contemplation. "As the piece evolves, the material explodes and takes on many new directions." The same is true for Anna Clyne. In "This Midnight Hour" from 2015, mysterious atmosphere, effervescent fury, rapturous lyricism, and forward-moving motor skills come together. The work reflects two poems by Juan Ramón Mantecón and Charles Baudelaire. Grace Williams, a "grande dame" of contemporary Welsh music who died in 1977, is also represented. Today, she is somewhat unjustly forgotten, but Benjamin Britten also considered his friend one of the outstanding voices of her era. Her music thrives on lyricism and declamation. Her mature creative phase began with "Penillion" from 1955, a work characterized by a distinctly original expressiveness and Welsh character.
Tickets are CHF 34-76 for adults, CHF 18-39 for students and youths under 25, and CHF 5 for kids up to age 12.
