With Giuseppe Verdi, Anton Bruckner, and Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, sacred choral music reached a great zenith in the late 19th century. Their works unfold an overwhelming richness of sound, reminiscent of the polychoral style of the Renaissance masters Gabrieli and Monteverdi, while simultaneously carrying on Bach's polyphonic art. The composers combine emotional depth with architectural sound design—created for the vastness of large church spaces and imbued with personal faith and musical mastery. These choral works are monuments of Romanticism – luminous, multifaceted, and still moving today. The program with the Basler Madrigalisten includes Bruckner's contemplative motets, the impressive double-choir “Cantus Missae” by Rheinberger, and two rarely performed sacred works by Verdi that demonstrate his great expressiveness in chamber music density.
