Basler Streichquartett — Story of a Friendship
The Basel String Quartet will be playing Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3 in F major and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet KV 421 in D minor.
The universal genius Ivan Sollertinsky was the best friend and close confidant of Shostakovich during Stalin’s merciless dictatorship. The collection of Shostakovich's letters to Sollertinski are important and moving documents. The performance of Shostakovich’s string quartet is framed by short readings from these letters.
Mozart dedicated six string quartets to his revered composer friend Joseph Haydn. In the moving words of his dedication “al mio caro amico Haydn,” Mozart emphasized how much Haydn's string quartets had been his guiding light and inspiration. He called his own quartets children, whom he released into the world under the protection of the great man. The Basler String Quartet interprets the String Quartet KV 421 in D minor from this cycle. Quotes by Mozart and Haydn that are related to this friendship are also recited.
Tickets are CHF 35-45 for adults, CHF 10 for students, and free for children.
