Blues Festival Basel — Lady Bluespower @ All Star Blues Brunch

Volkshaus Basel
Sunday, 21 April
100:00

The last event of the Blues Festival Basel is traditionally held on Sunday morning—the All-Star Blues Brunch. At this legendary session, which is a favorite among die-hard blues fans, the ladies of blues take the stage this year, for what is called “Lady Bluespower @ All Star Blues Brunch.”

Justina Lee Brown is a powerhouse whom you have to experience live with her excellent band. Brown, a Nigerian Afro, funk, soul, and blues artist, songwriter, and entertainer, is nominated for the Swiss Blues Award for the second time since 2022. She christened her new album “Lost Child” in 2023 with a concert in Baden. The album consists of nine tracks, each of which has its own meaning and authenticity, which is also expressed in a musical stylistic diversity. The Swiss Blues Society has named the album “Best Self-Produced Album of 2023.” Brown gained fame in Africa at a young age and won the Women in Entertainment Award for Best African Voice in London in 2009. She then toured Europe and Nigeria for years with various projects, leaving audiences speechless but deeply moved and euphoric with her powerful voice and energetic shows. Together with her great band, Brown won the Swiss Blues Challenge in 2019, made it to the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2020, and achieved a sensational second place for Switzerland at the European Blues Challenge in Sweden in 2022. In 2023, the Justina Lee Brown Band performed at major festivals in Switzerland, Belgium, and Germany—catch her in Basel on this last event of this year’s Blues Festival Basel. Manu Hartmann is a fixture in the Swiss music scene. In 2018 she won the Swiss Blues Challenge with her blues formation (formerly City Blues Band). Six months later, they became the first large Swiss formation to reach the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and in the same year, they played in the final of the European Blues Challenge in the Azores. In 2020, she released her first studio album “Bad Girl” and was nominated for the Swiss Blues Award. The charismatic Swiss singer has now been nominated for the Swiss Blues Award for the second time—coinciding with the christening of her current and fifth album, “There's Something Wrong,” at the sold-out Atlantis in Basel. Hartmann is known for not being afraid of other styles—soul, funk, and psychedelic elements are an important part of Manu Hartmann's “Modern Blues 3.0.” This can be clearly heard on the current album. The 11 songs, nine of which were written by her, are evidence of a versatile artist who does not submit to the “blues police.” Hartmann and her band always impress with an energetic and professional show.
