Blues Festival Basel — Swiss Gala Blues

Volkshaus Basel
Friday, 19 April
19:30

This double-header evening will be dedicated to blues bands from Switzerland!

Bluedög featuring Phipu Gerber: You don't have to describe the "blues sorcerer" from Solothurn Philipp "Bluedög" Gerber—no, you have to see, hear, and feel him! His way of working the strings on his guitar is legendary. Hardly anyone feels the blues like he does—a man who can play the delicate tones quietly and then turn up the guitar brutally and explode! The blues rock machine will be back live in 2024. After “Shut up and Listen to the Band” (2021), “Bluedög” will release their new album in 2024, ensuring that there will be new songs. Lucky Wüthrich, the 27-year-old from Thun, is on the right track. When he reaches into the strings, raises his rough voice, and plays with his band, exceptional technical talent and musical sensitivity meet iron discipline and thrilling entertainment. This February, Wüthrich celebrated the record launch and tour start of his second album “My Kind of Music.” As the title suggests, he is moving exactly where his heart is at home. The blues remains the basis, but there is also significantly more soul, funk, folk, and pop, more independence, rebellion, coolness. What may raise eyebrows among strict purists of the genre is likely to be even more popular with a broad, young, or young-at-heart audience. Wüthrich lightly dusts off his sound and refreshingly emancipates himself from the classic 12-bar blues. He wrote all the songs on “My Kind of Music” himself and provides an unusually deep insight into his emotional life. The lyrics are catchy without seeming clumsy, thematically sophisticated, and yet easy to digest. No matter whether he sings about his broken heart or his love for music, whether he takes part in the fate of friends, or calls on humanity in general for tolerance and peaceful coexistence—Wüthrich hits the nail on the head and touches with his blunt, honest manner, to describe his world.
