Camerata Variabile — Trop de Trip

Don Bosco Basel
Sunday, 27 April
17:00

“Trop de Trip” does not refer to escapism induced by substances, but a different kind of intoxication: that of sound—blissful and completely legal. The price for this is either years of practicing a string instrument and the willingness to work intensively in a group for seven hours every day, or a ticket to this concert.
The most important ingredient for the perfect trip are the compositions. First, there is Borodin's unfinished, sensual string sextet—unfinished, probably because he was studying chemistry in Heidelberg at the time and didn't have enough time alongside his laboratory work. Then there is the second nonet by the Finnish force of nature Olli Mustonen. Like much of the music from the North, it is strongly harmonically situated and has a final movement that is hard to beat in terms of virtuoso speed. The mix in this program also includes a new string quintet by Friedemann Amadeus Treiber, a valued colleague in the string guild who knows exactly what he is doing with 20 strings. The crowning finale will be a giant among the string octets—the 19-year-old George Enescu, with his Wagner-like symphonic tuttis and gypsy-like recitative escapades, has written a tour de force for the players and a true sound intoxication for the listeners.
Tickets are CHF 40 for adults and CHF 20 for students and youths.
