Chamber Music Concert

Stadtcasino Basel
Tuesday, 16 January
19:30

The program of this concert with violinist Esther Hoppe, cellist Christian Poltéra, and pianist Ronald Brautigam includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 5 in D major, op.70, no. 1 “Ghost Trio;” Arthur Honeggers’sonatine for violin and Cello, H.80; and Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2, in E flat major, op. 100, D 929. Beethoven's trio is particularly impressive in the first movement due to its brevity of form, and the climax of this movement lies in the dense motive work of the development, which has been called a miracle of concentration. The central Largo is considered the climax of the entire work. The finale, again a sonata movement, takes up the sound world of the first movement, but—probably intentionally—no longer achieves its density.
To this day, the sequence in which Schubert's piano trios were created is not clear. The E flat major trio was played for the first time on December 26, 1827 at a music club event and was probably created shortly before that. Several of its motifs are thought to be inspired by Swedish songs.
Tickets are CHF 38-68.
