Michael and Florian Arbenz have been playing together in various bands for decades and have traveled all over the world. Their projects have involved jazz greats such as Greg Osby, Dave Liebman, and bass legend Ron Carter, with whom the brothers have released a new trio album in February. On this evening, they will be playing in an exciting and idiosyncratic collaboration with the Atom String Quartet—the great Polish string quartet that has helped shape European jazz in recent decades. Just as Michael and Florian have found an almost symbiotic interaction with their astonishing musical collaboration, they always find an incredibly inspiring musical complement with the Atom String Quartet.
In this way, Arbenz vs Arbenz & Atom String Quartet, with their independent, modern playing that is committed to both classical and jazz traditions, move with great confidence through the groove-focused, lyrical, rhythmically and harmonically complex, and open pieces and passages of the program "Reflecting Bach," which will be premiered at this concert. The program consists of Michael Arbenz's arrangement of Bach's iconic Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, with which he reflects Bach's music in his very own way. He combines his creative curiosity with his diverse experiences with the jazz tradition and classical music. The music has a direct connection to Bach's composition and thus contains familiar elements that are contrasted by groove, improvisation, and new timbres. The instrumentation of strings, piano (harpsichord), and drums (percussion) is already present in Bach's music and is thus taken into a new dimension. Michael Arbenz's compositions, which are located in the field of tension between jazz and classical music, are designed in such a way that flexibility, unpredictability, and interaction play a central role and are simultaneously shaped by Bach's musical language.
