Mozart's stay in Paris in 1778 was not a success—unpaid lessons, an unsuccessful job search, and even the death of his mother caused great hardship for him. But despite difficult circumstances, the 22-year-old managed to conjure up works of the highest quality and joy of life, such as his Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra. At the same time, he wrote his 31st symphony, called the “Paris Symphony.” In typical Mozartian style, he is purported to have said: “I am very happy with it. But I don't know whether I like it, and to tell the truth, I care very little about it; because who won't like it?"
The works of the French impressionists Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy form an exciting contrast. Commissioned in 1905, Ravel found the composition of the “Introduction et Allegro” rather tiresome. “A week of work and three sleepless nights must be enough to complete it”—the result is completely different and leaves nothing to be desired in terms of artistic perfection and inspiration.
In this concert, the Collegium Musicum Basel under the direction of Georg Köhler will be accompanied by flutist Felix Renggli and harpist Sarah O’Brian.
