At the start to the Brahms cycle of the Collegium Musicum Basel, which begins this fall, they will be playing the great German composer’s 1. Piano Concerto. The dramatic (and feared by all pianists) octave trills of the striking and stormy first theme alternate with calm and deep melodies. Technically and musically one of the most demanding concertos for piano, major orchestras only entrust this monumental work to the most experienced pianists. The German-Spanish pianist and world-renowned professor at the Hochschule für Musik Basel Claudio Martínez Mehner is one of those—with his extraordinary technical skills and his unparalleled understanding of complex musical contexts, he confidently leads through the composition. Paul Hindemith's contrasting style of "new objectivity" lets the audience breathe a sigh of relief in the second part of the concert, and Carl Maria von Weber's famous “Freischütz” overture ends the varied evening in a cheerful and playful way.
