Collegium Musicum Basel, with conductor Johannes Schlaefli and tenor Daniel Behle, will be performing works by Gustav Mahler, Willem Mengelberg, and Richard Strauss.
The Dutchman Mengelberg was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century; with his interpretations of works by, among others, Mahler and Strauss—approved by the great composers themselves!—he set standards for all future generations. He also emerged as a composer, and his “Andante and Scherzo for Strings” forms a fitting complement to Mahler and Strauss. After Mahler's somber symphonic poem "Totenfeier," which was later to form the first movement of his Symphony No.2 ("Resurrection"), the program features the star tenor and Basler by choice, Daniel Behle, with four heavenly songs by the Austrian composer. Last but not least, the legendary philanderer Don Juan delights in Strauss' famous humorous work.
Tickets are CHF 49-84 (CHF 15 for kids and students) and can be purchased at Bider & Tanner.
