Cristina Branco & Group—“Eva”

Sunday, 19 June

Cristina Branco is one of the most important Portuguese fado singers. Although initially more interested in the music of singers like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, and Joni Mitchell, she eventually was attracted to fado through records by Amália Rodrigues, which her grandfather gave her for her 18th birthday. The discovery of fado triggered her career as a singer, and after concert tours throughout Europe and North America she is now considered one of the great interpreters of fado de Lisboa. But Branco is more than a romantic fado singer with glamorous robes and the image of a diva. In 2006, her alter ego, “EVA,” made her debut, when Blanco was struggling with the central question, “What is freedom?” She projected here desires, thoughts, and dreams onto EVA, which helped Branco to shed the artificial perfectionism of the music industry and go her on way. On this way she is supported by her trio consisting of Bernardo Couto (Portuguese guitar), Bernardo Moreira (doublebass), and Luís Figuereido (piano and keyes), who have formed close musical bonds with Branco over the years. Figuereido is responsible for several of their songs together, and they all arrange the songs together in the rehearsal room. Electronic and percussive elements, polyphonic background chants, the fun of improvisation by the jazz musicians gained space in her music and made it more unique.
Tickets are CHF 30.00–88.90.
