It's the 20th album by the Israel-based composer and performer Avishai Cohen, but only the third project by Abraham Rodriguez Jr., who describes himself as a Nuyorican, Santeria connoisseur, and doowop batarumba king, although he has been contributing his secret sauce to the best Latin New York recordings for decades. The album, which Cohen produced with Latin Grammy winner Javier Limón, is as sensitive as a serenade on a street corner in Spanish Harlem. Invocations to the Orishas of the Yoruba are mixed with newly interpreted versions of James Brown's "It's a Man's World," the Oscar-winning "Theme to Exodus" from 1960, and the Sinatra-associated "Fly Me to the Moon." It's all based on the driving clave rhythm that underpins virtually all Afro-Caribbean music (including jazz), while Rodriguez's hand percussion syncopates with Cohen's irresistible bass patterns and their voices blend like those of true friends. Iroko fulfills Cohen's long-held dream of "doing a Latin project with my favorite Latin musicians in New York.”
Tickets are CHF 37.20-90.90.
