Culturescapes — SAHARA 2025

Various Locations
Ongoing Event
Thu., 09 October until Sat., 29 November

Culturescapes is a multidisciplinary biennial arts festival that since 2003 has focused on the cultural landscapes of countries and regions. Based in Basel, it extends its presence far beyond one city or country with the network of more than 40 partner institutions all over Switzerland, in Belgium, and in the three-countries region between Switzerland, Germany, and France.
With each edition, the festival aspires to promote cross-border dialogue and mutual learning between cultures, as well as cooperation and networking. In 2025, Culturescapes renews its focus on the Sahara. After the first Sahara edition in 2023 was primarily dedicated to the sub-Sahara region, the 2025 festival will look more closely at North Africa, which maintains close political relations with Switzerland—for example in so-called migration dialogues, where the main issues are repatriation, border security, and development cooperation. As the Sahara is often overlooked or ignored in our Eurocentric perspective and is reduced to statistics, poverty, and war, even though many historical and current connections exist, Culturescapes has decided to deepen its focus for the first time. On October 9, the festival will start with a four-day opening at the Kaserne, and on November 29, the festival will end with a performance marathon at the Museum Tinguely. The exhibitions and presentations will take place in many locations throughout town; visit their website for the comprehensive schedule.
