Dance Festival “Steps—Portraits in Otherness

Reithalle Kaserne Basel
Saturday, 21 May
20:00

“Steps,” Switzerland’s largest dance festival, which was launched and funded by Migros Kulturprozent, moves the whole country every two years. Renowned international dance companies delight the audience with their shows all over Switzerland. “Portraits in Otherness” is the second of two dance productions in the Basel area.
“Portraits in Otherness” is a triple bill par excellence, featuring the stylistically diverse solo dance works of three promising young artists (https://www.steps.ch/en/programme/portraits-in-otherness.html). Mamu Tshi is a promising voice on the Swiss street dance scene. Her work “L’Héritière” deals with existence and dignity, catapulting the audience into the fascinating world of “krumping.”
Like Tshi, Dickson Mbi has a passion for hip-hop and captivates audiences with his impressive “popping” skills. His solo dance work “Duende” is a personal narrative, which powerfully conjures up memories and deep feelings.
Joy Ritter completes the spectacular trio. She combines Filipino folk dancing, classical dance education, and the art of “voguing” in her solo work “BABAE,” which is inspired by Mary Wigman’s famous solo work “Hexentanz.”
All three explore the boundaries of their artistic roots and develop their own signature choreography. The choreographer Akram Khan and his dramaturge Farooq Chaudhry are the driving forces behind the idea to promote young international talent. The Swiss artist Tshi was mentored by the choreographer Philippe Saire. The three mentors hope to pass on their experiences and create a platform to showcase talent, which is a big gain, not only for those on the stage, but also for those who sit in front of it.
Tickets are CHF 36.10, with discounts for holders of the Legi, ColourKey, Kulturlegi, and STU card.
