Dance Festival “Steps—Wonderful World”
“Steps,” Switzerland’s largest dance festival, which was launched and funded by Migros Kulturprozent, moves the whole country every two years. Renowned international dance companies delight the audience with their shows all over Switzerland. “Wonderful World” is the first of two dance productions in the Basel area.
What happens to society when it gets out of balance? The choreographers Kinsun Chan and Martin Zimmermann explore this question in their first joint creation “Wonderful World” (https://www.steps.ch/en/programme/martin-zimmermann-kinsun-chan.html). The result of this top-class collaboration is a visually unique piece. The scene is an unstable stage that tilts at the slightest movement and literally pulls the ground out from under the dancers' feet. The stage becomes a symbol for our constantly changing world. “Wonderful World” is Zimmermann and Chan's surreal, abstract, and at the same time poetic discussion of human behavior patterns in states of emergency. Playing with life-size puppets, the ensemble members of the Theater St. Gallen dance company raise the question of who is whose puppet. The dancers risk falling with every step. But the allure of the danger outweighs it and makes them start the daring game of balance again and again from the beginning. With Zimmermann and Chan, representatives of two worlds meet. There will be two performances of this ballet at the Schauspielhaus on this day.
Tickets are CHF 30-110 for adults and CHF 20 for people under age 30.
