Brooklyn-Berlin based American drummer-composer Devin Gray is known for his genre-defying approaches to music. His work seamlessly blends modern jazz, electronic experimentation, and avant-garde improvisation while creating engagingly unique sonic landscapes. In his project "Melt All the Guns," Gray addresses the ongoing gun violence in the United States. His compositions are finely structured and poetic, but also charged, intense, and filled with free passages. One senses the resonant frustration, as well as the longing for the good that wants to be shared and explored. His music bursts with energy and dense, playful dynamics. Without a bass, there's more room for the brilliant clarity and melodic sensitivity of Ralph Alessi and Myslaure Augustin's subtle, intelligent playing. Gray confidently holds all the threads together and amplifies the simmering explosiveness with nimble rhythms. You can sample his new album, “Melt All the Guns II,” at https://spaces.hightail.com/space/CYAWE0fYu6 or come to the quaint bird’s eye jazz club in Basel on this evening.
