English Theater — The Witch of Edmonton
The Gay Beggars Drama Group is an independent and non-professional theater company that has specialized in the production of plays (etc.) written in English. Their next production will be “The Witch of Edmonton,” written in 1621 by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker and John Ford, but now set in 1971 England. This remarkable early modern tragicomedy tells the story of Elizabeth Sawyer, a woman accused of witchcraft by the suspicious inhabitants of a rural English village. From demon dogs and cursed Morris dancing to murderous love affairs and mischievous ghosts, “The Witch of Edmonton” is a folk horror par excellence, revealing the dark underside of England’s green and pleasant land, and challenging the hardened beliefs of its day. In its unique concoction of tragedy and comedy, the play offers an array of complex characters and presents a great opportunity to engage with a range of different roles. The play will be directed by Thomas Manson (director of last year's “Opening Night at the Abbey Theatre” and a short play from 2022‘s Red).
Tickets are CHF 25 for adults and CHF 15 for students. Tickets can be purchase online or at the box office (cash / Twint) on the show nights. The box office and bar open at 18:30, and doors to the theater open at 19:00 on all show nights except December 8 (bar/box office at 15:30, doors at 16:00). The show on December 8 will additionally host a free Q&A session after the performance with the production team and some actors, which you are welcome to join irrespective of which (if any) performance you attend!
