European Days of Monuments 2023 — Basel

Various Locations
Saturday, 09 September

The Europäische Tage des Denkmals (European Days of Monuments, also called European Heritage Days) are part of an EU-wide initiative that since 1994 has been implemented under various names in many European countries. Held this year on September 9 and 10 in Switzerland, these days are designed to celebrate European heritage by giving everybody an opportunity to visit some of Europe’s beautiful historical monuments. The related activities in Basel are taking place on this Saturday.
The activities in Basel focus on the area between Steinenberg and Aeschenplatz. On Steinenberg, Elisabethenstrasse , and Aeschenvorstadt there are numerous objects of architectural value that demonstrate the topics of repairing, refurbishing, restoring, reusing, further using, and further building—from the restoration and expansion of a renowned concert hall to the extensive repairs of an important neo-Gothic church building and the exemplary renovation of the facade of an office building from the booming post-war period.
In 2023, the Day of Monuments also offers the opportunity to explore the architectural and cultural-historical diversity of Basel on numerous guided tours and walks. As usual, the Cantonal Monument Preservation agency has put together an interesting program with several partner organizations as well as local and knowledgeable experts.
The guided tours frame a lunchtime concert with the Kammerorchester Basel (Basel Chamber Orchestra) in the Hans Huber Hall of the Stadtcasino at 12:30. Vintage trams offer an authentic tram culture, and the commemorative day ends with another musical highlight in the form of a concert by the tango virtuoso Marcelo Nisinman.
The detailed program will be published online at the beginning of September. As in all of Switzerland, the guided tours and events on the Day of Monuments in Basel are free of charge. The number of participants is limited for all guided tours and events, so be sure to register in advance online at https://www.basler-baukultur.ch/.
