Tue., 17 June until Sat., 09 August

Caroline Achaintre’s (*1969) works oscillate between object and subject, each evoking a powerful presence that explores the concept of the uncanny. Spanning from large-scale textile pieces to watercolor drawings and ceramic sculptures, her artworks gaze from the wall, shapeshift, and sit at the crossroads of abstraction and figuration. The observer can see a mask, a garment, an animal…
Achaintre draws inspiration from multiple cultural references, such as European carnival traditions, futurist and postmodern museum architecture, science fiction, prehistoric art, and animism (the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence). “I process anything that triggers my imagination,” says Achaintre, “seeking the fantastical and superimposed.”
Achaintre is a trained blacksmith. She studied at the University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany; Chelsea College of Art and Design in London; and Goldsmiths University of London. Her work is part of numerous public and private collections and is constantly featured in exhibitions and biennials.
There will be a public opening of this exhibit on Tuesday, June 17, from 18:00-21:00. A second exhibition with the work of U.S.-American artist Ted Stamm will open on the same night.
