Exhibition — Xuan Dung Burckhardt: Controlled Uncontrollability

Centrepoint
Ongoing Event
Thu., 03 September until Sat., 10 October

Centrepoint Basel presents a retrospective of works by Xuan Dung Burckhardt, spanning the years 2018–2026. The exhibition highlights the evolution of the self-taught abstract artist, whose practice is defined by experimentation, intuition, and the dialogue between control and chance. Rather than using traditional brushes, Burckhardt creates her paintings by allowing paint to flow and move with unconventional tools and materials. Rice, sand, salt, wire, Bodhi leaves from Vietnam and Japanese newspaper fragments become integral elements of her artistic language, adding texture, transparency and depth. A defining aspect of her work is what she calls “controlled uncontrollability”—guiding the behavior of materials while embracing unexpected outcomes. Since 2019, she has also chosen not to title her artworks, inviting each viewer to experience and interpret them freely.
This retrospective brings together eight years of artistic exploration, revealing a practice driven by color, movement, transformation, and curiosity, where intention and discovery exist in continuous balance.
The exhibition is accessible during the Centrepoint opening hours.
