Fatoumata Diawara — The Queen of Mali

Volkshaus Basel
Sunday, 23 June

Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara has finally become a global pop superstar. Since the release of her debut album in 2011, she has been touring the world seemingly non-stop, collecting music awards and working with greats such as Mulatu Astatke and Herbie Hancock. She has worked on musical projects with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney, and desert blues legends such as Toumani Diabaté. Despite so much star power, one connection stands out—she now has a very special friendship with Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn.
Her unique voice, which is clear and raw at the same time and magically captivates listeners, has become her trademark—alongside her accomplished electric guitar playing, which picks up on traditional melodies of the Kora or N'goni of West Africa and seemingly effortlessly teleports them into the here and now. The follow-up album from 2018, "Fenfo," surpassed the debut and was nominated for a Grammy; Diawara also won the prestigious Victoires de la Musique.
Her latest album "London Ko" (2023) is Diawara's most musically diverse album. For the first time, the album includes numerous featured guests, such as soul legend Angie Stone and Afrobeats star Yemi Alade. This makes "London Ko" sound as versatile as it is profound. A star of Malian music opens up her world.
Tickets are CHF 76.90-96.90 for seats and CHF 53.50 for standing room.
