Festival Art Classics Basel — Octets

The Art Classics Basel festival with its four concerts is all about homages—homage to the 97-year-old Hungarian composer György Kurtág, one of the greatest living composers; homage to Bach, who is admired by Kurtág, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Shostakovich; homage to Schumann, also one of Kurtág's role models and friend of Mendelssohn; homage to Mendelssohn, who rediscovered Bach and to whom Schumann dedicated his String Quartets op.33; and Ravel's homage to Debussy, to whom he dedicated his Sonata for Violin and Cello.
For this concert, the Basler Streichquartett accompanied by Renato Wiedemann (violin), Philippe Villafranca (violin), Alessandro D’Amico (viola), and Stéphanie Meyer (cello) will be playing two movements from Shostakovich’s String Octet, op. 11; Bach’s Ricercar a 6 from "Musical Offering;" Kurtág’s Ligatura for 2 Cellos and 2 Violins; and Mendelssohn’s String Octet.
Tickets are CHF 30-40 for adults, CHF 10-12 for students, and free for youths under age 18; available at https://eventfrog.ch/de/p/gruppen/art-classics-basel-festival-vom-2-bis-25-6-2023-7031283274342091054.html. Festival passes for all four concerts are also available (only at Bider & Tanner) for CHF 90-120.
