The Art Classics Basel festival with its four concerts is all about homages—homage to the 97-year-old Hungarian composer György Kurtág, one of the greatest living composers; homage to Bach, who is admired by Kurtág, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Shostakovich; homage to Schumann, also one of Kurtág's role models and friend of Mendelssohn; homage to Mendelssohn, who rediscovered Bach and to whom Schumann dedicated his String Quartets op.33; and Ravel's homage to Debussy, to whom he dedicated his Sonata for Violin and Cello.
On this evening, Susanne Mathé on violin and Alexandre Foster on cello will be playing Bach’s Cello Suite in C minor; a cello solo from Kurtag’s "Signs, games and messages;” Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello; a violin solo from Kurtag’s “Signs, games and messages;” and Bach’s Solo Sonata in A minor.
