The Spanish flamenco singer Duquende, actually Juan Rafael Cortés Santiago, has long been considered one of the successors of Camarón de la Isla. In 1974, when Duquende was 9 years old, Camarón invited him to accompany him on the guitar. In his artistic career, Duquende stepped out of the footsteps of his predecessor. In 1997, he was asked by Paco de Lucía to replace his brother Pepe in the Paco de Lucía Septet. This gave Duquende the opportunity to develop further through world tours. Three years later he released the album “Samaruco” (2000). Throughout his career he has worked with artists such as Tomatito, Manzanita, Juan Carmona, and Vicente Amigo—an exciting starting point for the concert of his quartet at the Basel Jazz Festival 2023.
The Spanish star guitarist José Fernández Torres, known as Tomatito, presents his Latin Grammy award-winning program including flamenco dance! He is accompanied, among others, by his son, Tomatito Hijo on the guitar. Tomatito was discovered and encouraged at the age of 15, also by the flamenco legend Camarón. He started working with Paco de Lucía early on, and today Tomatito is considered one of the most gifted guitarists of our time. He is the epitome of Flamenco Nuevo and offers performances of the highest caliber. He has received worldwide recognition for this, in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, as well as at renowned festivals such as Montreux and North Sea Jazz.
Tickets are CHF 40.20-96.90.
