Flying Steps — Flying Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach's music magically attracts other art forms—Bach has been jazzed up and danced to, and in the vast majority of cases the results have been exciting. The connection between Bach's music and breakdancing, an important element of urban hip-hop culture, works particularly well.
The Bach project developed by director Christoph Hagel and choreographer Vartan Bassil together with the dance troupe Flying Steps hit like a bomb in 2010 and has been touring around the world ever since—with the greatest success imaginable. The core of the performance is breakdance to the sounds of Bach, played live on the grand piano and harpsichord. But two DJs mix it all up with electronic sounds, while video projections and dance routines in a contemporary style provide additional accents. Christoph Hagel summarizes the recipe for success as follows, "Breakdance enters the hallowed halls of high culture, Bach goes on the road to youth."
