Experience a magical New Year's Gala with music by Pjotr Tchaikovsky at the Stadtcasino Basel and enjoy a varied program with some of the composer’s most famous works. After the pompous and festive polonaise from the opera "Eugene Onegin," the Bulgarian pianist Irina Georgieva brings a jewel of music history to life with her interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1.
After the break, the Moravian Philharmonic, one of the most successful and oldest symphony orchestras in the Czech Republic, will take you into the fantasy world of Clara, her toy soldiers, and the army of the Mouse King with highlights from the fairy tale ballet "The Nutcracker." When composing the ballet music, Tchaikovsky fought for every note, just as persistently as the soldiers against the mice. But in the end, this apparent impossibility is transformed into harmonious sounds. The ballet about the Nutcracker, who turns into a prince for one night, was Tchaikovsky's greatest success during his lifetime. To this day, "The Nutcracker" takes theatergoers of all ages—mostly at Christmas time—into a weightless, sweet dream world.
