Since his performance at the Eastside Kings Festival 2022 in Austin,Texas, critics and renowned international blues musicians have agreed—Sean “Mack” McDonald is one of the greatest young talents in the international blues scene. Barely 24 years old, McDonald effortlessly plays styles from Robert Johnson to T-Bone Walker, from old country blues to Chuck Berry. In contrast to other great talents, he is musically more broadly based, which is an advantage for his musical future. Mcdonald is coming to the Groove Now Blues Weeks Basel for the first time. With the Greaseland All-Stars, he will be accompanied by a band that is among the best that international blues has to offer, and all of them are music greats who know his music inside out.
Born in Augusta, Georgia, in 2001, McDonald grew up with jazz, R'n'B, and gospel. He started playing the guitar at age 7, and at age 15, he recorded a video in a music store that went viral and immediately attracted a lot of attention in the blues world. The path to becoming a professional blues musician was paved.
As with many other musicians, McDonald’s love for music started in church. He cites many influences, including Ray Charles, James Brown, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Guitar Watson, Muddy Waters and others.... but also jazz with Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and of course gospel. His fan base among well-known blues musicians is growing. Taj Mahal, Junior Watson, Kim Wilson, Kirk Fletcher, and Kid Andersen all are convinced that McDonald will be one of the important blues musicians of the future. And guitar is by no means the only instrument he has mastered. He has recorded songs in the studio where he played all the instruments himself, including harmonica, piano, bass, and drums as well as guitar. There is no doubt that blues fans will be hearing a lot more from McDonald in the future.
