Guided Hike in English — Vogelberg

Basel SBB Train Station
Sunday, 29 October
9:20

Everybody has seen the yellow hiking trail markers in Switzerland. But hardly anyone knows who is responsible for them. The marked Swiss hiking trail network is around 65,000 km, which is about 1.5 times the circumference of the Earth. Behind this professional service is a great deal of volunteer work done in cantonal organizations, supported by the umbrella organization “Schweizer Wanderwege.” In the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basellandschaft, the “Wanderwege beider Basel” association is responsible for these tasks. About 50 volunteers also offer other services for hikers, such as guided hikes in various parts of Switzerland as well as in Alsace and the Black Forest.
This season, there will be several guided hiking tours in English in the Basel region. Your experienced hiking guide, Hanspeter Preiswerk, who has worked in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry for many years, will be leading these free hikes.
On this day, the hike will lead from Passwang – Vogelberg – Grauboden – Ulmethöchi – Ramstein – Lauwil – to Reigoldswil. The highest peak in the area, the Vogelberg (1203m) offers a beautiful 360° view, maybe with a sea of fog covering the Mittelland. When passing the Ulmethöchi you might see migrating birds on their journey to the wintering grounds. The hike down to Reigoldswil illustrates the remoteness of the Baselbieter Jura. The distance for the hike is 12.5 km, with an ascent of 400 meters and a descent of 850 meters.
What should you bring? You need to provide your own food and drink, wear hiking boots and suitable clothing for the weather, and make your way individually to the meeting place. Your guide will send detailed instructions when you register.
Meeting place for this excursion is at Basel SBB at 9:20, at the S3 to Porrentruy. The outgoing journey is at 09:37 from Basel SBB, change at Zwingen to bus B115, for arrival at Passwang at 10:34. The return journey will be departing from Reigoldswil at 15:32 (bus B70 to Liestal), then changing to IR 37 to Basel and arriving at 16:13 at the Basel SBB.
Participation in the hike is free; however, you need to purchase your own train tickets or ride free with the U-ABO. If you would like to participate in this hike, please register directly with your guide at 079 395 9758 or hanspeter.preiswerk@teleport.ch by October 25.
