Haydn Night — The Gallina
Joseph Haydn loved the harmony of nature and culture, of man and animal. His rural origins in the market town of Rohrau probably laid the first seeds of that magnificent hymn to life close to nature, which is evoked in his last great work, the oratorio “The Seasons.” In it, we encounter the crowing of the rooster at sunrise—but we do not encounter the cackling of the hens. Haydn's attitude towards hens remains unclear. And whether the "Paris" Symphony” (No. 83) is rightly called "La Poule" remains, as is so often the case with these nicknames, in the realm of uncertainty. What is certain is that the name refers to the rhythmic motif of the oboe that accompanies the second theme in the first movement—more clucking than cackling.
Undaunted in its musical research, the Haydn2032 project with the Il Giardino Armonico orchestra under the direction of Givovannin Antonini, follows the possible trail of the chicken in the truly cackling final theme of Symphony No. 57 and in the "limping chicken" of the Menuetto alla zoppa from Symphony No. 58. As if that weren't enough, Antonini will once again release rooster and hen, dog and cat in the "Capriccio Stravagante" by the Italian Baroque composer Carlo Farina. So look forward to a concert that will provide downright animalistic pleasure!
Tickets are CHF 30-90 for adults and half-price for children and students.
