After a 3-year hiatus, Brighton-based multi-instrumentalist John J. Presley returned with the announcement of a new album, “Chaos & Calypso,” which was released in October 2023. The first track on the long player is “Sinnerman”—a brooding, hypnotic track featuring a collaboration with singer and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter of Blood Red Shoes. It's a slight change in Presley's sound with the use of drum machines, synthesizers, and pedal steel, but still with his trademark guitar tone that has every guitarist open-mouthed. Early support from 6 Music, Radio X, Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos and others confirm that Presley is back for the next chapter. The new album features more collaborations—for example, with The Invisible's Tom Herbert on bass and Terry Edwards on horns (PJ Harvey).
Presley writes music that can paint a thousand pictures. Soaring soundscapes, instant-future garage rock classics to meditative studies, his palette is vast. You can hear the inspirations—Coltrane, Mingus, Waits, The Kills to The Dirty Three. Presley is also a sought-after musician. He has recently played for Duke Garwood, Smoke Fairies, Nadine Shah, Laura-Mary Carter, and Juanita Stein.
Tickets are CHF 30 in advance and CHF 35 at the door (CHF 5 discount for students).
