Junge Sinfoniker — Aufbruch (Departure)

Don Bosco Basel
Tuesday, 26 November
19:30

On this evening, the Junge Sinfoniker Basel, under the direction of Matthias Kuhn, will be performing Richard Wagner’s prelude to the first act of “Lohengrin” as well as Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. 97, “Rhenish.”
Imagine you have just moved house: The boxes are still in the hallway, the children have not yet got used to the new school, the connection to the communication sockets has of course not yet been installed. And in this mood, you decide to write a symphony! Schumann must have felt something similar when he moved from Dresden to Düsseldorf in September 1850 and began composing his “Rhenish” Symphony in November, sketching it in only 2 days. This testifies to a tremendous creative power, which is not least due to the euphoric reception by the Düsseldorf public. And by December 9, it was already written in every detail.
Wagner's “Lohengrin” was written at the same time as Schumann's opera “Genoveva” in Dresden until 1848, but could not be premiered until 1850 in Weimar due to Wagner's escape as a revolutionary persecuted on a warrant in 1849. Schumann must have suffered from Wagner's popularity and fame. In November 1845, he wrote to Mendelssohn that Wagner had presented him with the text to “Lohengrin” and that he now had to “throw his own into the well.”
Both composers were outstanding representatives of Romanticism, both had to leave Dresden, and both sound as different as possible in their works!
Entrance is free but there will be a collection.
