Kammerorchester Basel — Basler Freuden
In this concert, the Kammerorchester Basel under the direction of Delyana Lazarova references Basel, mountains, and Brazil, as well as a virtuoso cello. Arthur Honegger had just finished his composition studies when he visited the mountain village of Wengen in the summer of 1920. He was so overwhelmed by the magnificent mountain scenery of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau that he came up with a magical “Pastorale d'été”: light, lively, and cheerful. A quarter of a century later, he was once again inspired by Switzerland, or more precisely by his patron Paul Sacher. For Sacher’s Basler Kammerorchester, he wrote his fourth and most cheerful, light-hearted symphony entitled “Deliciae Basilienses,” a tribute full of musical allusions to the city of Basel, the Rhein, and the carnival with the Morgestraich.
Embedded between Honegger's light-flooded musical worlds is another homage: in “Summer Heat,” Helena Winkelman recalls the Kammerorchester Basel’s trip to Brazil and combines the Swiss with the South American world, salsa with the cowbell (really!), and melancholy with virtuoso brilliance. There is also a large portion of brilliance in Pjotr IljitschTchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations.” In his secret cello concerto, Tchaikovsky captures the spirit and tonal language of the sunny genius, the revered Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Tickets are CHF 24-95 for adults and CHF 16-48 for students.
