Kammerorchester Basel — Christmas Concert
Music as if from a great distance and yet very close. Tender, solemn, festive, reeling with happiness—that is Johann Sebastian Bach's “Christmas Oratorio.” First, the shepherds from the field see him, then the wise men from the East: the newborn Christ is there for everyone. But only one person gave him the right notes. The fact that Bach drew on existing music and proved to be a master of recycling? That's a gift! That this music is almost 300 years old? Unbelievable! That the danger of catchiness is considerable, just thinking about the opening chorus? It has to be! This grandiose music can also be experienced with similar emotion by people who can no longer or no longer want to believe, but by no means deny the civilizational and cultural heritage of Christianity, as it can by people of faith.
“Jauchzet, frohlocket”—with the first bars, Bach's festive music manages to captivate listeners anew every year. The “Christmas Oratorio” is perhaps Bach's most touching, most solemn, most profound Christmas music. Without it, Christmas would be unthinkable for many of us today.
Tickets are CHF 47-95 for adults and half price for students.
