He wasn't even 15 years old when Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy had already produced 12 small symphonies for strings. These were far more than mere compositional exercises and caused jaws to drop at the illustrious concerts in his parents' garden hall (featuring professional musicians from the royal court orchestra!). Also on the program of this concert with Kammerorchester Basel are two concerts for violin and orchestra by Johann Sebastian Bach. They place high musical demands on the performer, requiring precision, logical phrasing, teamwork, and a floating sound. They are perfect for soloist Vilde Frang, who scores a perfect 10 in the audience's popularity ranking.
Who exactly was Holberg, the namesake of Edvard Grieg’s “From Holberg’s Time”? He was a Baroque Norwegian, a poet, a contemporary of Bach and Handel. He was called the Molière of the North, and he was so famous that Grieg was allowed to celebrate his 200th birthday in grand style. He did so with such delicacy and sophistication, so lyrical and tender, that he was even allowed to call his suite “the wig piece” in honor of the great national poet—and nobody took offense. For what a wig it is!
Tickets are CHF 30-90 for adults and half price for youths and students.
