Islands of bliss, passion, and doubt two composers in love with the same woman! Béla Bartók’s first violin concerto is a declaration of love from the young, shaken composer to the revered violinist Stefi Geyer: “A letter from you, even a line, a word from you makes me rejoice, another almost makes me cry.” This emotional intoxication gives rise to music that flares up, calms down again, lurches from one extreme to the other. Unfortunately, Bartók's love remained unrequited and he kept his violin concerto under lock and key for the rest of his life. It was not performed until 1958.
Othmar Schoeck also was passionately enamored and captivated by Geyer, and his love for her also remained unfulfilled. Despair and hope are also present in his concerto, which also attempts to explore the possibilities of the genre. What disappointed hopes can trigger...
The works by these two composers are accompanied by the lively Symphony No. 3 in D major by Franz Schubert, who was not yet 20 years old when he wrote it!
Tickets are CHF 32-95 for adults and half price for youths and students.
