Bach’s Mass in B minor is remarkable in several respects: firstly, for its text and its evening length, and secondly, for its technical complexity. Bach demonstrates his full compositional skill over the long period of its creation—it was written in several stages between 1724 and 1749.
The Swiss music educator Hans Georg Nägeli, who also published Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," called the Mass in B minor the "greatest musical work of art of all time." And rightly so: In this Mass, Bach reveals the theological worldview of Baroque man. He relates forms, timbres, numbers, keys, and musical figures to the religious content presented in the Mass.
Various styles and techniques of European art music are thus combined: counterpoint, but also Italian opera, German church music, and Baroque choral tradition. Also noteworthy is that the Mass in B minor is a setting for a Catholic mass, but written by a Protestant composer.
The work will be performed by the Kammerorchester Basel and the Tenebrae Choir under the direction of Nigel Short.
Tickets are CHF 43-90 for adults and CHF 22-45 for students.
