Kammerorchester Basel — Stabat Mater

More than 30 composers have felt drawn to the “Salve Regina” over the centuries and have set it to music. They have ranged from Johannes Ockeghem to Claudio Monteverdi, Georg Friedrich Händel to Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt to Arvo Pärt. Also on that list is Joseph Haydn, the grand master of the symphony and inventor of the string quartet, who also wrote important church music, including both the “Salve Regina” and “Stabat Mater” from the 1760s. After his superior died and Haydn was promoted from deputy to principal conductor, he was allowed to write vocal music for the court of Count Esterhazy as well as instrumental music. Which he did straight away, with the medieval Latin poem “Stabat Mater,” which has long been used as a prayer text. Within a short time, the work became known far beyond the borders of the country and gave Haydn's fame a powerful boost. The “Salve Regina,” composed a few years after the “Stabat Mater,” is also a testimony to Haydn's deeply felt religiosity and, although rarely performed, is one of the most beautiful things Haydn wrote.
Tickets are CHF 32-95 for adults and half price for youths and students.
